California Earthquake Faults is an iPhone®/iPad® app that shows your current location (or a location you specify), the closest major California faults and approximate distances to those faults.  There are 5 main screens:

Fault Maps Current or found location, 4 closest major faults and approximate distances to those faults.
Distances Distances to 35 of California's largest and most active faults.
Find Find a specific location.
Info Basic app info.
Settings View/adjust app settings.

These screens are described in detail below.

The current version (1.5) is available on the California Earthquake Faults for $1.99. It requires IOS 7.0 or later and runs on the iPhone® 4/4S/5/5S/5C, iPad® 2/3/4, iPad mini® 1/2 and iPad Air®.

The next version (1.6) is awaiting review by Apple. It includes the West Napa fault. It should be available in early September 2014.


FAULT MAPS

Current Loc / Found Loc
Shows current location (blue pin) or found location (green pin), 4 closest major California faults and approximate distances (in miles).

Bay Area
Shows major faults in Bay Area. If you are in the SF Bay Area, shows your current location and approximate distances to 4 closest major faults. (see below)

So Cal
Shows major faults in southern California. If you are in southern California, shows your current location and approximate distances to 4 closest major faults. (see below)

California
Shows major faults in California, your current location and distances to 4 closest major faults. (see below)

Faults 1-4
Allows zooming into 4 closest major faults. Use this feature when traveling to locate faults in your area. The closest point on the selected fault is shown with a red pin. (see below)

DISTANCES

Shows approximate distances from your current or found location to 35 of California's largest and most active faults.


FIND

Look up specific locations in California to see how close they are to major California faults. Found locations are shown with green pins (see Treasure Island example above).

Find relies on Google Maps®. Response times vary depending on quality of Wi-Fi connection, proximity to cell phone towers, signal strength and the availability of Google Maps® services.

SETTINGS

Map Type
Street view, satellite view or satellite/street view.

Describe Selected Fault
When one of 4 closest faults is selected, show name of fault on red pin that shows closest point on fault.

Describe Found Location
When the Find feature is used, show location on green pin that shows found location.

Map Region

  • Manually change region of map viewed. Best for zooming when current location is changing.
  • Always change region of map viewed when a location update is received. Best for accuracy. Bad for zooming.
  • Change region of map viewed when a location update is significantly different than the previous location. Good for zooming when the current location is not changing.

Source of fault data is the U.S. Geological Survey (www.usgs.gov). All fault lines and distances are approximations. Accuracy varies depending on the fault and region of the fault. For more precise fault information, go to the USGS web site.

There are many types of faults in California. Some are active and others haven't been active for thousands of years. Some are very large and others are very small. Some are well defined and others are not. And some haven't been discovered yet. This app focuses on 35 of California's largest and most active faults. The Distances screen above lists the 35 faults. This app does not show all faults in California.

Depending on your device and available services, location services uses a combination of cellular, Wi-Fi and GPS to determine your location. If you're not within a clear line of sight to GPS satellites, your device can determine your location using crowd-sourced Wi-Fi3 and cell tower locations. The speed of drawing the maps and accuracy of distance calculations depends on your proximity to cellular towers, Wi-Fi hotspots and GPS satellites.
